Industrial design - Y1

The bachelor industrial design teaches design from five distinct viewpoints, known as expertise areas:

  1. math, data and computing

  2. user and society

  3. technology and realization

  4. business and entrepreneurship

  5. creativity and aesthetics

During the first year I was mostly thought the basics of engineering through courses like: applied physics, calculus and data-analytics. In addition courses such as creative programming or creative electronics further developed engineering basics whilst introducing the first expertise Areas.

The educational model of industrial design is challenge based and centered around self-directed learning. This is best demonstrated in the first design project I was enrolled in, which resulted in: PAUX.

PAUX.

This is PAUX, the maternity wear of the near future. It is our take on exploring the potential of adaptive clothing in context of maternity wear and auxetics. 90% of pregnant women from our research got rid of their maternity clothing. They would have kept it had it still fit them right. To fill this demand, we took the unique properties of auxetics, which expands vertically when stretched horizontally, to explore and prototype adaptive clothing for mothers to wear throughout and even longer after their pregnancy period.
